I’ve Been Camping

Daily writing prompt
Have you ever been camping?

Yes.

It smells like fresh, crisp pines, thick, fragrant smoke in chilly air, and sunscreen mixed with dirt. Sweet tendrils of wild flowers and pungent greenery mixed with whiffs of lighter fluid and seasoned barbecue cuts.

It feels like dust at your ankles, hot sun on your face and frigid water. The dopamine of resting fatigued limbs and squishy, nylon sleeping bags. Cold air on your face with warm hands and fuzzy socks. Goose flesh, wet hair, and hoodies.

It sounds like the first chirps of the morning ascending into an orchestra of birds, leafy breezes and squirrel chatter. The pops and crackles of moisture trapped in fire wood and the dragging of foldable chairs on soft earth. The soft rumble of boiling water, rustling of snack bags and soft thudding of logs adjusting to their new, unsteady charcoal integrities. Lapping water on a nearby shore.

It tastes like watery hot cocoa, hotdogs, ketchup, mustard, salty chips, chocolate, chlorine, mint toothpaste.

It looks like hazy sunlight streaming through trees in the late, golden afternoon. Bright, sputtering stars in inky, indigo skies. Blinding sparkles dancing on watery peaks. Neon swim suits, deer, gnats, and gnarled branches. Blues and brightness and tents and fire. It looks like small grills, hiking boots, and smiles.
